Behaviour Based Interviews
The CBE uses an interview method called Behaviour Based Interviews to determine the best candidates for non-teaching positions. The Behaviour Based Interview process is based on the principle that past behaviour is a good predictor of future behaviour. Therefore, in the course of an interview, the candidates are asked about their past job performance behaviour in order to assess how they will perform on the job in the future.
Your responses require not only reflection, but also organization.
When answering “behaviour-based” structured questions, your reply should follow a “S T A R” format:
1) Specific Situation/Task , 2) Actions that you took, and 3) Results achieved
In other words, describe what the situation was or what caused you to act (situation/task), what you did about it (action) and how it turned out (result).
Depending upon the responsibilities of the job and the working environment, you might be asked to describe a time that required problem-solving skills, adaptability, leadership, conflict resolution, multi-tasking, initiative or stress management. Preparing for an Interview at the CBE
Know your strengths, skills, abilities, interests, career plans and goals. Reflect on your own professional, volunteer, educational and personal experience to develop brief stories that highlight these skills and qualities in you. You should have a story for each of the competencies on your resume as well as those you anticipate the job requires. Prepare stories by identifying the context, logically highlighting your actions in the situation, and identifying the results of your actions. Keep your responses concise.
Come well rested and dress comfortably in business or professional casual attire. Relax and be yourself. We also recommend that you do not make plans immediately following the interview because it may take longer than you expect.
