Community concerns shut down wind turbine project
CALGARY – The Calgary Board of Education is halting its proposed wind turbine project in response to community concerns.
The CBE invited the community to an open house Nov. 2 to provide public input on the proposal to erect a wind turbine at Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School. The CBE also provided the public with an online option for responses.
The CBE was proposing to build a 42.7-metre wind turbine as an educational opportunity for students to learn about alternative energy options. The turbine would save energy and reduce the CBE’s environmental footprint. In addition, it would have been financed as part of a larger energy project that came with a guarantee that the overall project would pay for itself in 20 years.
“We asked the community for input because we genuinely wanted to learn the public response,” says Frank Coppinger, Superintendent of Facilities and Environmental Services. “As a result of that consultation, we are being guided by the community and will not proceed with the wind turbine.”
