It was an exciting day for the Calgary Board of Education. With help from students, teachers and community leaders, the CBE held the public launch of the Education*Energy*Environment (EcoStewardship) initiative and website at Sunalta school.
This initiative is a first for a Canadian school board. The May 9 th event featured a series of short presentations that introduced a new, environmentally conscious vision for CBE and its partners, making the public school board a model of local and global environmental stewardship. Presenters demonstrated their commitment to the project by signing a special charter and contributing to a ceramic mural, created by Lord Beaverbrook High School students. Presenters included students, The City of Calgary, Alberta Environment, The Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils , the Alberta Council for Environmental Education and the CBE.
According to Pat Letizia, Executive Director of the Alberta EcoTrust Foundation, CBE's environmental initiative demonstrates exemplary community leadership for all Canadians.
"The CBE Education*Energy*Environment initiative addresses the environmental concerns critical to Canadians," said Ms. Letizia. "I am proud to participate in developing this robust, proactive plan for ecological stewardship. In partnership with others, the CBE will reach new heights in community leadership, forging a sustainable future for all Calgarians".
"The CBE is committed to enriching not only the minds of our students, but the environment of the community that surrounds them," said Pat Cochrane, Chair of the CBE Board of Trustees. "The EcoStewardship approach is unique in Canada and positions the CBE once again as the leader in public education. We are very proud of the work by our employees and students for taking on the responsibility and displaying exemplary citizenship to ensure our community - and our world - is sustainable for generations to come."
The CBE Education*Energy*Environment Team was established in 2006 to provide strategic leadership and help guide the CBE toward environmental sustainability. The team works closely with a 22-member steering committee to develop strategies for environmental sustainability. The EcoTeam plans to increase environmental literacy through public education, community engagement and corporate partnerships. Among other methods of implementation, the team plans to integrate "natural world experiences" into classroom education so that students can develop ecological respect.
