students take part in middle school showcase

Recently 100 students from Area V middle and junior high schools participated in a skills showcase at Lord Beaverbrook High School.

Students displayed work in robotics, wood work, fashion technology, digital photography and video production. Field experts worked with students to gain information about what they learned, connections they made with subjects they are learning and how they might be able to use their skills outside of a classroom setting.

An exciting element was added to the day with two real-time competitions in the areas of food preparation and web site development. Students were given a task to complete in a given amount of time – similar to the recent provincial and national Skills competitions.

In the food preparation competition students were given a choice between two recipes and worked in small teams. They were given one hour to prepare their item, make sure their station was cleaned up at the end and to pay attention to the presentation of their food. Panel members evaluated the students on their cooking techniques, use of time, presentation, teamwork and originality among other things.

Students were given two hours to build a website promoting the Skills Showcase which had to include buttons, links, menus, images and tables. Students had access to Macs or PCs, a variety of web design software, digital cameras and different logos and banners. As well as assessing the final website, panel members judged time management, planning, teamwork, technique and creativity.

This showcase was similar in style and design as the WorldSkills competition coming to Calgary in September. The importance of the exhibit is that it creates and reinforces a positive learning environment while keeping students connected to the linked worlds of education and work.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this great showcase!
