CBE student champions!

Students in Grades 7-9 in Calgary Schools were presented with an opportunity from the Alberta Champions Society to showcase their knowledge about five influential Albertans who have made a significant contribution to the community of Calgary and area. The Alberta Champions Society was formed to recognize and honour those Albertans by creating "Fields of Fame" around the city as tributes to men and women of the past who contributed to the Calgary of today.

Students had a choice of: writing an essay, creating a YouTube video or other multi-media presentation on one of the nominated champions of the past which included: R.B. Bennett, Colonel James Macleod, Chief David Crowchild, Eric Harvie, Alice Jamieson, and Senator Patrick Burns. Students presented a historical perspective of how these citizens contributed to Alberta’s past and how the actions of these individuals still resonate with us today. Through heartfelt and poignant messages, students clearly articulated the character of these Albertans in terms of their compassion, decency and sense of fairness. Students illustrated ways that they can lead positive change in their communities and encouraged others to also make positive contributions.

Four students and one class were recognized for their winning contest entries as part of the prestigious “Unveiling of the First Field of Fame” celebration held on May 20, 2010 in the Winter Garden at Jamieson Place.

Congratulations to the winners of this contest and all other students and classes who submitted entries in this contest. To view the winning entries, click this link to Alberta Champion Society Contest Winners.
