Coaching the Coaches:
Calgary Board of Education partners with the Coaching Association of Canada to provide coach training and certificatio opportunities for teachers
Extra-curricular activities directly support student learning and reinforce life-long skills such as teamwork, goal-setting, responsible citizenship, and promote life-long health and wellness. Junior/middle and senior high athletics play a major role in Calgary Board of Education schools with over 11,000 students taking part in inter-school organized sporting activities in 2009-2010. Central to a positive athletic experience is the teacher-coach whose role becomes that of student mentor, advocate, and motivator who fosters these traits within a safe and competitive environment. The Calgary Board of Education and its teacher-coaches are committed to providing all student-athletes with a positive experience. To support that goal CBE teachers recently took part in coach training provided through the Coaching Association of Canada’s National Coach Certification Program (NCCP).

This past August, 50 middle/junior high school teachers took time out of their summer to receive NCCP training that focused on improving overall student safety, injury prevention, decision-making, and coaching best-practice. World-class facilitators, many of whom coached at the national or post-secondary level, provided CBE teachers with practical ideas and hands-on activities that will directly benefit all our student-athletes. A similar coach training opportunity was provided for senior high football and wrestling coaches this past June, with over 75 CBE teachers taking part.
As part of the Calgary Board of Education’s commitment to athletics all teacher-coaches involved in middle/junior and senior high athletics will have the opportunity to receive NCCP training over the next three years. This initiative is being done in collaboration with the Coaching Association of Canada; National Coaching Institute – Calgary; the University of Calgary; Calgary Senior High Athletic Association; Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks, and Wildlife Foundation; as well as the respective provincial sport bodies. Upon completion, all teacher-coaches will receive a certificate and be provided with a nationally recognized coaching certification number through the Coaching Association of Canada. Special thanks to the National Coaching Institute-Calgary for all their hard work and effort to support this initiative.
