New Backpacks to start the new school year

This year, through the generous support of individuals and organizations in the community, the Calgary Board of Education distributed over 800 backpacks filled with school supplies to students through the annual “Backpacks for Kids” program. These organizations and individuals not only purchased a great collection of school supplies, they also volunteered their time and energy to assemble the backpacks so they would be ready for the start of the new school year.

The supplies that are in the backpacks gives students the tools they need both at school and at home so that they can complete homework assignments and other special projects. In addition to the backpacks distributed centrally, there are a number of organizations that have donated directly to schools in their immediate community. Along with the backpacks, the Calgary Board of Education has also received an assortment of school supplies that will further support students in their learning.

The donation of backpacks makes a difference to our students and their families. Principals ensure they go to students who need them the most. With backpacks and access to basic school supplies, students come to school prepared to learn and feel part of the learning community.

On behalf of Calgary Board of Education students and our schools, we would like to thank the following organizations that donated backpacks, school supplies and monetary funds towards the Backpacks for Kids program this year:

  1. TELUS Community Ambassadors
  2. KidsFest in partnership with Grand & Toy
  3. Staples: #110 Signal Hill
  4. Direct Energy
  5. Sherritt International Oil and Gas
  6. Scotia Bank (Sunridge Branch)
  7. Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC)
  8. Beta Sigma Phi, Calgary
  9. TD Canada Trust (Shawville Branch)
  10. Costco
  11. First Alliance Church
  12. Other Generous Calgarians

We highly value the contribution of these donors and thank them for their support of our students.

Gifts such as these backpacks help to improve self esteem, support learning and bring a measure of happiness to children who may lack the basic necessities for successful school experiences. -CBE Teacher
