Cardel KidCasters program brings broadcasting to life
For many the dream of being a sports news broadcaster is something elusive and unattainable, but not for a group of 32 grade seven students at H.D. Cartwright School who were able to participate in the Cardel Kidcasters Program.
The brainchild of CTV reporter Lisa Bowes, the Cardel Kidcasters Program was created as a partnership among CTV, Cardel Homes, the Calgary Board of Education and Bowes Knows Sports to introduce grade seven and eight students to the world of broadcast journalism. "They gain a lot of skills with this, I see them writing better and I also see the confidence that a lot of these kids get — it's priceless. It's probably the most satisfying work I've ever done, to be honest with you."
Cardel Kidcasters research newsworthy stories using video, print and digital mediums under deadlines before delivering their broadcasts in a simulation of newsroom and field environments. The two-part program consists of on-camera writing assignments, interviews and oral presentations.
Mary Ellen Dewar, Principal, H.D.Carwright School explains the value of this program. "Lisa taught the students about the importance of on-camera presence, speaking to an audience, researching stories through a number of sources, writing interesting leads, meeting deadlines and much, much more. This experience was phenomenal and we thank Lisa Bowes for an experience which will follow these thirty-two students through their educational careers."
Cardel Homes is proud to support this program. "It keeps kids involved with sports and their community. We want to keep youth engaged in order to become better citizens," says Linda Marek-Koski, Marketing and Community Relations Manager, Cardel Homes.
The Calgary Board of Education's involvement with the Kidcasters program is facilitated through the CBE's Corporate Partnerships Department. For information on partnerships in the Calgary Board of Education, please visit our Educational Partnerships page.
