CBE recognized for literacy leadership

According to Calgary Reads, a child has until age five to learn 5,000 spoken words in order to be well prepared for reading. The CBE has worked in partnership with Calgary Reads for the past ten years to ensure all children have the resources they need to become fully literate.

On October 14, Calgary Reads presented the CBE with a Literacy Leadership Award to recognize the CBE’s ongoing work in supporting young readers and promoting literacy. The award was presented to Lynn Ferguson, Vice-Chair, Board of Trustees and Marsha Levy, System Principal, Corporate Partnerships at the tenth annual general meeting of Calgary Reads.

“We appreciate the recognition and the honour of working with Calgary Reads,” says Levy. “This partnership has helped many young students overcome reading challenges, and that’s something we’re proud to be a part of.”

Trained volunteers from Calgary Reads regularly spend time in CBE classrooms helping students in Grades 1 and 2. Since its creation, Calgary Reads has helped many struggling young readers reach their full potential. Calgary Reads started with a collaborative program involving the CBE that was designed to recruit and train volunteers who could deliver reading support in schools.
