Hitmen Honour newest team members!

With more than 300 people in attendance at the 2010 Calgary Hitmen’s Player Awards Banquet on Sunday, March 14th, three new members of the Hitmen team were honoured. These new individuals were not recognized for their hockey accomplishments on the ice, but rather for their outstanding contribution to students in the classroom. During the evening event, Monica Paul from Alternative High School, Beckie Lypkie from William Taylor Learning Centre and Evelyn Hickey from Centennial High School were acknowledged for their outstanding commitment, energy, and dedication towards the promotion of literacy in their schools. In 2009, the outstanding educators were Jo-Ann Bailey from Rosedale School and Danna Widdified from Roland Michener School.

Since 1999, the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club and exclusive program sponsor, Schlumberger Canada, have extended high interest collectable hockey books to students across Alberta schools as part of the “Literacy for Life” program. This year, over 8,500 Calgary Board of Education students received a copy of the latest book: Hitmen Courage. This is a great example of a partnership that motivates students to achieve excellence and strive for their personal best. This partnership between the Calgary Board of Education, The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club, Schlumberger Canada and ReadOn! Literacy for Life, received the 2008 Mayors’ Award of Excellence for Literacy Support and Enhancement.

Annually, the Calgary Hitmen, Schlumberger Canada and ReadOn! Literacy recognizes outstanding educators who make a difference for students in the area of literacy.

Mike Moore, Calgary Hitmen Director of Business Operations, provided the following comments at the Annual Calgary Hitmen Awards Dinner:

The Calgary Hitmen recognize the importance of literacy and education in the development of children as well as our very own Hitmen players.  Reading provides a foundation for learning and is an integral part of the Hitmen and Western Hockey League culture.  All Western Hockey League players are provided education benefits as part of the commitment from each organization in the league for their personal academic development. It is unanimously understood that the organizations become role models for the players and the players in turn become role models in their communities especially with education and in our local schools.

The Calgary Hitmen are honoured to have the opportunity to work with organizations like Schlumberger Canada and the Calgary Board of Education in the ReadOn! Literacy for Life program. These partners and educators are instrumental in forming the lives of children and it is with great privilege that we recognize them as well as the exemplary educators in attendance at the 2010 Calgary Hitmen Player Awards Banquet.

The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club, Schlumberger Canada and ReadOn! Literacy would like to recognize all educators who make a difference in the lives of students on a daily basis.
