C.O.P.E. is a partnership between families, and the provincial ministries of Education, Health and Wellness, and Children and Youth Services. A shared concern amongst parents, educators and physicians is early identification and intervention for children experiencing emotional and developmental difficulties.
C.O.P.E. provides school-based consultations with physician specialists (pediatricians and child psychiatrists) to support teachers and parents whose elementary school-aged children are experiencing behavior or emotional struggles impacting their learning by:
- Providing consultations in a collaborative manner with teacher, parents and students to assess the child’s situation
- Identifying mental health and/or developmental issues that may impact learning and behaviour
- Providing supportive recommendations for the management of the identified issues
- Providing referrals to other community organizations as necessary
- Providing case management and follow up
C.O.P.E. Requests can only be made by the school. To help ensure a smooth C.O.P.E. Request process, schools should talk with their Area Learning Support Team contact, and the C.O.P.E. Family Liaison working in their Area.
