The focus of the Family-School Liaison is to facilitate and support connections between family-school-community to assist in educational learning.
Family-School Liaisons (FSLs)
We support students and their families in setting goals, planning strategies, and arranging resources that will help students to be successful in school, at home, and in their community.
We understand that families know their children best. We work together with parents and teachers to help children meet their goals at school.
The goal of the service is to address the emotional behavioural needs of students where the difficulties identified by the school negatively impact learning.
Some of the concerns that we can help with are :
- School-based concerns
(i.e. motivation, classroom and playground concerns, school transitions, attention difficulties, etc.)
Other school-identified concerns that are negatively impacting learning may be:
- Emotional concerns
(i.e. anger, conflicts, self-esteem, anxiety, grief, depression, etc.)
- Social concerns
(i.e. peer conflicts, attention difficulties, relationship concerns, friendship issues, etc.)
- Family concerns
(i.e. separation/divorce, sibling conflicts, parenting strategies, lack of resources, home-school communication, etc.)
- Behavioural issues
(i.e. safety issues, bullying, defiance, bizarre behaviours, etc.)
- Other
(physical/health related issues, pregnancy, alcohol/drug dependency, basic needs resourcing, advocacy, etc.)
Parents can be involved by:
- Teaming up with their child's teacher to discuss his/her needs
- Getting together with the FSL to share relevant information about the child and being involved in his or her treatment planning
- Continuing regular contact and involvement with the FSL to discuss their child's progress and review strategies
Other ways parents can be involved are: participating in family meetings, practicing new skills with their child, attending information sessions related to their child's issues, and working together with the school to try out new ideas. Content Moderator: KRenaud
