student health partnership (SHP)
"working together for success in school"
what is it?
The Student Health Partnership (SHP) is about students, parents, teachers and health-care professionals working together to help young people with health-related learning needs make the most of educational opportunities.
The goal of the SHP is to enhance access to a range of coordinated, school-based services intended to support children and youth be successful learners.
The provincial ministries of Health and Wellness, Education, and Children and Youth Services provide the funding for SHP support services. The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is a partner in the Calgary Rocky View Student Health Partnership.
what does this mean for CBE?
The CBE already offers a range of support services for students with specialized learning needs. SHP services enhance access to a range of health supports for our students, addressing needs not being met by other organizations. It also enhances existing services in special settings.
what supports are available?
Through SHP schools have access to the following services:
- Mental Health therapy: Grades 1-12
- Family School Liaison support: kindergarten – Grade 12
- Occupational Therapy: Grades 1-4, and some specialized settings
- Physical Therapy: Grades 1-4, and some specialized settings
- Speech therapy: some specialized settings and initiatives
Please refer to the Calgary Rocky View Student Health Partnership website for specific information about each service, www.crvshp.ca.
C.O.P.E. (Community Outreach of Pediatrics and Psychiatry in Education): Grades 1-6, is also available through SHP.
what is the eligibility for SHP?
SHP is a short term, non-crisis intervention; intended to provide support for students who are not receiving comparable supports elsewhere. The supports are designed to help students become more successful learners, and ultimately achieve their academic and social-emotional potential.
how do I access SHP Services?
SHP Requests are initiated by the school. The School Learning Team in consultation with parents/guardians will determine whether SHP supports may benefit the student. If SHP supports are pursued the school must complete a Request for Student Health Partnership (SHP) Services, and obtain parent/guardian consent in writing. Any information provided on the SHP Request is confidential and will be shared only with parent consent permission on a need-to-know basis. SHP services are free of charge and participation is voluntary.
