TLC in middle/junior high schools

Program Details

• Character is embedded in every subject as appropriate, and service to the schools/communities is part of character education.
• Respect for self, others and the environment are cornerstones of the program philosophy.
• TLC students remain together in straight grade core courses, and as much as possible in the elective courses.
• Students learn through whole group, teacher-directed instruction for core courses.
• Students are grouped by skill ability for language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
• Cohort groupings are TLC students only.
• Students continue in French and Band.
• Students gain recognition and understanding of our multicultural and diverse communities.
• Monthly awards assemblies are held to recognize TLC students of the month, based primarily on character.
• Students begin each day with the singing of O Canada (French and English).
• Opportunities are provided for horizontal and vertical academic enrichment.
• Entrance requirements are based on the Student Profile, in conjunction with the report card and teacher referral form.
• Screening of students for grade level achievement in all core subjects occurs in March of the Grade 8 year.

Expectations of TLC Middle/Junior High School Students

• At least average abilities and grade level achievement.
• Age appropriate organizational skills.
• The ability to focus on tasks for an extended period of time.
• The ability to listen to and follow oral directions without delay.
• Self-motivation and a willingness to be challenged academically.
• A willingness to do nightly homework.
• An ability and willingness to participate in positive social interactions, engage in problem solving and model good character.
• A willingness to undertake a leadership role in the school, including citizenship and service.
• An ability and willingness to take ever-increasing responsibility and ownership for their own learning (independent work within a structured setting).
• A willingness to wear a school uniform.

Expectations of TLC Parents

• There is consistent open communication between home and school.
• Parents, students and teachers have clear and shared expectations around assessment of various kinds.
• Parents of TLC students sign a commitment to the program expectations document, which includes the wearing of uniforms by students. 
• Parents are willing to monitor homework.
• Parents understand the opportunities for academic enrichment provided for high school.
• Parents will sign their child’s agenda daily as requested.
