CBE Second Language Initiative Update - Q & A
The CBE Second Language Initiative has been revised for September 2011. This revision reflects the CBE's commitment to offering additional language instruction and to creating opportunities for students and families to make choices about student learning experiences.
Grades 7-9
- Students will be provided with the opportunity to register in an additional language course.
- Students will not be required to register for instruction in an additional language.
- Schools will offer at least one additional language as a registration option for students.
Grades 4-6
- Schools will make individual decisions as to whether they offer instruction in an additional language.
- Students will participate in an additional language instruction if it is offered in their school.
Language and Culture courses within the Alberta Program of Studies offer various entry points at the elementary and junior high levels with continuing courses at the senior high school level. Students participating in second language instruction will be provided with the appropriate level of instruction from the Program of Studies to ensure that they are engaged, supported and motivated as learners, whether they are novice or experienced language learners.
Decisions about additional language instruction within an individual school are to be made by the school principal, in consultation with school staff, parents, and where possible, with students.
Groups of schools serving students from the same communities will work together to provide a continuity of experience in second language instruction from Grades 4-9.
