physical/medical disabilities

Students with physical/medical and average cognitive abilities are served in their community schools. Strategists (special education teachers with experience in this area) assist schools in adapting programs, providing adaptive/assistive equipment, facilitating access to the school environment and arranging for therapeutic services if required. If a student has special health needs, medical support is contracted as needed.

Dr. Gordon Townsend School at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, provides a short term intensive rehabilitation program to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 who have recently had a major change in their functional abilities due to surgery, illness, or injury.  If therapeutic programming is required this time-limited intensive treatment (occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech/language therapy) occurs at the hospital with the goal of returning students to their community schools as soon as possible.

Students with complex physical, medical and cognitive needs may be eligible for placement in a special class setting.  Please see the information provided in the students with cognitive developmental disabilities section of the Calgary Board of Education website.
