Area V proposed student accommodation plan
Project Information
The Department of Community Engagement and Operational Planning has identified the need to address a number of student accommodation issues in Area V. There are five key issues:
- Sam Livingston School is at capacity and demand for French Immersion in SE Calgary continues to grow
- Enrolment in the Traditional Learning Centre (TLC) program at Le Roi Daniels School is growing and enrolment in the regular program is declining
- Acadia School and David Thompson School can no longer accommodate the growth from Copperfield, New Brighton and McKenzie Towne
- Maple Ridge School has excess capacity
- Mountain Park School has excess capacity
These issues will be addressed within the following parameters:
- Sam Livingston School will be over capacity in the 2009 – 2010 school year; they will not be able to accommodate the number of students projected. There is a need to redirect some students from Sam Livingston School for September 2009.
- Kindergarten – Grade 9 continuum of learning for students in regular program, French Immersion, Traditional Learning Centre, and Science Program
- K – Grade 9 continuum of learning for Tsuu T’ina Nation students
- Grade 7 – 9 continuum of learning for students enrolled in National Sport Academy
- Minimal disruptions for least number of students
- Opportunities for attending school close to a student’s residence
- Peer continuity
- Effective use of space and resources
The Department of Community Engagement and Operational Planning is working with school and community stakeholders to address these issues. See below for the community engagement strategy and meeting documents to help you stay informed.
Community Engagement Strategy
Our goal is to consult with you and obtain feedback on a proposed student accommodation plan.
By consult, we mean that we will keep you and other identified stakeholders informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns and aspirations, and provide feedback on how public input is or is not used to influence the final decision.
Your input may influence details of the accommodation plan’s final implementation. However, the final decision regarding any attendance area changes will be made by the Area V Director in conjunction with the Director of Community Engagement and Operational Planning. Any decisions regarding consideration of closure of programs and/or schools will be made by the Board of Trustees upon a recommendation from the Area V Director and the Director of Community Engagement and Operational Planning.
We will also provide you with an opportunity to offer feedback on this engagement process.
