Senator Patrick Burns School is located in the northwest with close proximity to the University of Calgary. We serve the communities of Charleswood and parts of Brentwood. Elementary feeder schools include Captain John Palliser, North Haven, Capitol Hill, and Collingwood. We are pleased to provide the Spanish bi-lingual program for students in North Calgary in grades 5 through 9. We also are pleased to house the National Sports Academy option for students in grades 7, 8 and 9. Sports included in this program include hockey, soccer and flex sports. Most of our students graduate from Senator Patrick Burns School to William Aberhart High School, although the National Sports Academy students may choose to continue their program at Central Memorial High School. Students in the ISA Spanish Bilingual Program continue to William Aberhart High School.

About the School

The school was built in 1961 and is situated on 12.53 acres with very large playing fields. In the spring of 2009 we opened a new Outdoor Adventure Centre which was lovingly planned and established through the hard work of many present and future parents and community members. Students enjoy using this facility every day. The school has 33 classrooms: a well equipped library; band room; art, drama and Construction Technology rooms; fashion and foods labs; updated, modern science laboratories; CTS teaching centres; computer labs with infused technology in many classrooms; four physical education locations with a full sized gymnasium, a dance/combatives area, a fitness area with weights and a climbing wall; and a superb cafeteria with a large variety of nutritious hot and cold food choices. We are also home to the National Sports Academy. As an alternative program choice, families may include hockey, soccer or flex sports as part of their education. Students take the courses that all of our students receive and learn more about their sport through the Training for Excellence in Sport off-site, and on-site experiences. We are excited to be home to the International Spanish Academy Spanish Bilingual program in grades 5 through 9. Students enrolled in this program have been taking Spanish as a bilingual program since ECS or grade 1. New students are only accepted with a high degree of fluency in Spanish as determined by intake interviews with the Spanish staff.

About School Name

Patrick Burns was born on July 6, 1856 in Oshawa, Upper Canada. He was the son of Michael Byrne Burns and Bridget Gibson, who were both Irish immigrants. His family moved to Manitoba in 1878, where he became a cattle dealer. In 1890, a meat packing firm called P. Burns and Co. Ltd., was established in Calgary. It became one of the largest businesses of its kind in the world, with branches in London, Liverpool, and Yokohama. Patrick Burns held directorships in several important banking, engineering, and insurance companies. In 1912, he was one of Alberta's "Big Four" cattlemen who, in that year, backed the first ambitious Calgary Stampede. Patrick Burns was called to the Canadian Senate in 1931 but relinquished his seat in 1936. Senator Patrick Burns died in Calgary on February 24, 1937.

    • Senator Patrick Burns School program is uniquely organized as follows:
    • Teacher advisor groups are provided through homerooms.
    • Teachers within the core program are organized into teams that work together to plan activities and integrate curriculum. They discuss strategies to work more successfully with their students.
    • On Fridays, the entire grade group works together in an inquiry/CTF model where students have choices in their learning activities related to the integration of all core and complementary subjects.
    • Outstanding Complementary program (options) - organized in semesters(exemption: French and Band are full year courses). Students are offered a wide variety of option courses which extend and enhance the Program of Studies
    • Staff are creative, concerned, competent and caring.
    • We are the Spanish bi-lingual program for North Calgary for grades 5 through 9.
    • The National Sports Academy is also housed at Senator Patrick Burns Junior High in grades 7, 8 and 9.
