Dr. E. W. Coffin School is located in the northwest community of Brentwood Heights and serves Bretwood Heights. Dr. E. W. Coffin School is also a school of choice and accepts students from out of boundary if space permits. Junior High feeder schools are Branton, Senator Patrick Burns and Simon Fraser. From junior high, students move on to either William Aberhart or Sir Winston Churchill High Schools.

About the School

The school, which was originally built in 1967, was destroyed by fire in 1974. It was rebuilt and re-opened on June 11, 1975. The school logo is a stylized version of a five-foot original sculpture that survived the fire.

Situated on 4.51 acres, the new, smaller version has 7 classrooms, 1 portable, a library, and a gym. There is a beautiful view of the mountains to the west.

About School Name

Dr. Coffin School is named for Ernest William Coffin, who was born in Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island, on February 9, 1875. He grew up in P.E.I. and received his education in the Maritimes and Massachusetts. In 1909, he came west to Calgary. Dr. Coffin served as principal of the Calgary Normal School for 30 years, 1911 to 1940. Many thousands of students came under his gracious influence, and his kindly interest and wise admonitions are remembered with gratitude.

Dr. Coffin served on curriculum committees for the Department of Education, was a member of the Senate of the University of Alberta for many years, and was active in study clubs, Home and School Association, and in church circles. He was the type of citizen which any community would be proud to claim. Dr. Coffin died in Calgary on May 3, 1963.

"The sunlight of the past is stored up in the coal - to give light, heat, and power to the future at someone's touch. Teachers are miners working in a living mine. Let the miner's touch kindle the fire of knowledge and the quest for wisdom in each and every child." Dr. Ernest Coffin, 1922 Calgary Normal School Yearbook.

School Mission

Our mission is to inspire a love of learning that enables students to become knowledgeable, responsible and responsive members of society.

Vision Statement

We envision a joyful and safe community of learners who honor and respect diversity and who pursue academic and personal excellence in a variety of ways.

Purpose Statement

The staff will endeavour to enrich the Alberta Program of Studies for our learners and to ensure that all students receive the necessary support to achieve success.

Belief Statements

  • All children have the ability to learn.
  • Student diversity enriches the learning experience of all.
  • Children learn best when they are actively engaged in learning, when they have choice and ownership in learning, when they make connections in their learning, and when they are given constructive feedback.
  • Positive relationships between students, staff, and parents are at the heart of the learning process.

  • School Motto

"Take care of yourself, take care of each other and take care of our environment".

    Unique Points

    • Whispering Woods. This is a natural area to the west of the playground which has been officially adopted by the school through the city's Adopt-A-Park program. This area provides valuable learning experiences for the students.
    • Sun Circle. The original Dr. Coffin School burned to the ground in 1974 with the smaller, current school being rebuilt in 1975. As the twentieth anniversary of the fire approached, the original site was reclaimed to provide a learning area for nature studies, science, and social concepts. The area includes a brick planter for each classroom and a custom crafted sundial in its centre.
    • Environmental Studies. A naturalization area/amphitheatre for children to observe sketch and write about living things. Dr. E. W. Coffin School received the Alberta Emerald Award in 2006 for this project.
    • A Before And After School Program. We offer a before and after school program; Millennium Kids ‘N’ Kare, 7:30am – 6:00pm (850-1127)
    • Unique Design. A unique architectural configuration including a sunken library as the centre of all classrooms. The computers are housed in this central location.
    • Location. The school is located at the end of a cul-de-sac resulting in limited traffic in the area and increased safety for our students. It is also located within easy walking distance to Simon Fraser Junior High and Sir Winston Churchill High School.
    • Supportive Parents. We enjoy an active and involved group of parents who volunteer their time and expertise on a regular basis.
