When it comes to water conservation, students in Lord Beaverbrook High School’s H2O Squad are on top of it. Since the environmentally focused group was formed by students in March 2007, after participating in Water Day, they have completed some major water conservation projects.
These eight students are a small, but active group and are making measurable improvements, which will reduce their school’s eco-footprint. They began by conducting an analysis of the school’s water usage, which started with the installation of water meters.
The students discovered that the urinals in the boys’ washrooms were set to flush every 12 minutes from 7:00 am – 11:00 pm regardless of if anyone was actually using the facility. To reduce water consumption the students had motion sensors installed in the boys’ washrooms and changed the urinal setting so they will only flush every 12 minutes when the sensor is set off.
