Glendale School - Grade 4 Class

The Grade 4 class is working on an inquiry titled Earth in Balance. They are looking at how everyone and everything is connected and every action taken on Earth affects everyone and everything. They are learning how to become better stewards of the land and take care of the earth and become mindful of daily actions and interactions.

The class has invited experts into the classroom to talk about their specific areas of expertise to increase understandings.

The class has involved the whole school in an efficient recycling program. There are also five classrooms with vermi composting bins to help reduce organic waste.

After succeeding with initiatives within the school community, the Grade 4 class went out into the local business community to invite businesses to reduce their ecological footprint. Participants were asked to complete a pre-survey in which they comment on energy and water use, their recycling efforts, and their daily waste. After reviewing the survey the class gave the businesses suggestions on small changes they could make to reduce their impact on the environment. These suggestions are being monitored throughout the month with visits to answer questions and provide encouragement. A post-survey will be conducted in June to measure improvement and success. This data will be presented at the Mayor’s Expo in June 2008.
