Lord Beaverbrook High School - Everything to the Best of One's Ability
As the largest high school in Calgary, Lord Beaverbrook makes enormous contributions to the Calgary Board of Education’s Environmental Mission of being a leader in global and local environmental stewardship. The school has a long tradition of leadership in environmental learning, and is a model site of environmental stewardship activities in the CBE.
Lord Beaverbrook is home to an exciting and innovate approach to environmental learning that makes use of an ‘Environmental Coach’ position to embed environmental learning across the curriculum. Maureen Pettigrew is the teacher who has filled this role over the past couple of school years with outstanding results. Her enthusiasm and hard work have moved environmental learning to a visible and important part of the school’s academic and extra-curricular program. Maureen teaches the locally developed Environmental Studies 25/35 course and runs the school’s green team of students.
Principal Dianne Yee is another champion of environmental initiatives, supporting and enabling the significant environmental improvements that have taken place at the school.
The school’s green team has undertaken considerable initiative to affect both student and staff learning and behaviour, as well as facility improvements. Some of the work undertaken at Beaverbrook includes:
- Installation of motion sensor urinals
- Installation of motion sensor light switches
- Installation of water conservation devices in refrigerator cooling equipment
- Implementation of compost program
- Water conservation projects
- Electricity consumption projects
- Waste reduction projects
- Active Destination Conservation program
- Pilot site for CBE EcoSites program
Lord Beaverbrook’s environmental initiatives certainly meet and exceed the school’s motto of ‘everything to the best of one’s ability’. The school is a model for other schools across the CBE and across the country. Congratulations to the staff and students of LBHS for the successful projects and substantial positive environmental impact created by the school’s efforts in reducing their impact on the planet – Well Done!
