Scenic Acres School – Learning about our Earth, Taking Action to Improve our Relationship with our planet

imageScenic Acres School is a K-3 school that opened in 2001 and is located in the NW Calgary community of Scenic Acres.  Environmental Learning has been a strong focus over the 2007-08 school year culminating in an Earth Day celebration of learning showcasing student achievement in the area of environmental literacy.

As part of the student showcase, students at Scenic Acres participated in a variety of events to honour and celebrate Earth Day:

  1. imageKindergarten students talked about Earth Day and the importance of caring for our earth. They drew pictures to show their ideas and feelings.
  2. Grade 1 students completed Earth Day activity booklets.
  3. Grade 2 students had been studying the rainforest as an environment and created acrostic poems on the rainforest, deforestation, and ecology.
  4. Grade 3 students completed a word search and world and earth puzzles.
  5. One Grade 3 student created a powerpoint on global warming and endangered animals in the countries of Peru, India, the Ukraine and Tunisia named Animals on the Edge (pps). Her focus was the impact changes in the environment have had on these animals.

Two Grade 3 students researched and created the ‘Scenic Acres School Environmental Report(pdf). In that report they challenged the other children at our school to bring a lunch on Earth Day with only items that can be completely eaten or composted. They also included information regarding why they were sponsoring a Garbage Free lunch, ideas for what students could bring for that lunch, why kids should care about climate change and the environment, and the lyrics to The Garbage Song. Please find a copy of their report attached.
