year end
clean out & round up
During the month of June, CBE schools and sites send more waste to landfill than any other time of the year. In June of 200 8 we generated 10,464 cubic yards of waste.
This is enough to fill 166 school buses.
The amount of waste going to landfill from the CBE during the month of June needs to be reduced. This can be done by holding a School Year End Clean Out & Round Up with the 3R’s in mind.
All CBE students are required to clean out their desks and/or lockers before the end of the school year. By setting up Sorting Stations to collect recyclable and reusable materials, we can reduce our waste to landfill and in turn reduce our ecological footprint!
Lord Beaverbrook High School took on this initiative last year with the following results!
Diverted From Landfill
Mixed paper– 6.36 cubic yards or 1.54 tonnes
Beverage Containers—1020 containers
School Supplies— 1.52 cubic yards or 135 pounds
Clothing— 14 extra large garbage bags or 420 pounds

Remember!
Keep track of the resulting reusable and recyclable materials diverted from landfill. This will provide you with a baseline for comparison next year.
Is there a way that your school can reduce the amount of waste through rethinking purchasing practices and refusing products that produce a large amount of waste? Think about possible answers to these questions as you conduct your Clean Out & Round Up.

Tell us about your participation in the year end clean out & round up, along with your result. Results will be posted on the CBE website in September.
