Naturalizing or restoring a section of your schoolyard is a wonderful way to forge community relations and develop an outdoor classroom that offers a wide range of opportunities to address curricular needs.

CBE and the Calgary Zoo have a partnership to support these initiatives. A series of workshop and think tanks are conducted every year.

Rich, first-hand contact with the natural world has long been recognized as a key component of environmental literacy. Laurelle Edmiston and Debbie Shaw, from Ecole Sam Livingston School have developed a curriculum resource to support the integration of naturalization areas into the elementary curriculum. You can download it here: Biggest Classroom of Them All (PDF).

If you are interesting in developing a naturalization area review the Guidelines and Procedures for the Construction for School Landscape Projects (PDF) and contact the EcoTeam.
