Mount View School – Champions for the Environment

Just ask any Mount View student about “Save energy Fridays” and they’ll tell you all about it.  Every Friday, the entire school shuts off its lights for the whole afternoon.  This has resulted in an increased awareness about energy and natural lighting that has resulted in a reduction in electrical consumption over the years at the northeast Calgary school.

Principal Bonnie Pelicano  and staff champion environmental learning in their school through encouraging and supporting a wide variety of environmental learning opportunities for their school’s students.  Grade 5 and 6 students’ art work conveying environmental themes in French are displayed throughout the school.  With messages like “sauvez l’environement” and “guardez la planete,” students are learning important messages while engaged in French as a second language instruction.

The Grade 4 students, led by Mrs. Wall, at Mount View pay particular attention to the environment in their classroom learning.  Students created a sort of time capsule book that contains the hopes that the students have regarding positive environmental planning and action.  From there, the Grade 4 students have incorporated environmental thinking into much of their work.  For example, demonstration grain elevators were made from recycled materials, a class and school wide paper and beverage container recycling program has been implemented, and students regularly shut off the lights when leaving the classroom.

Grade 2 students will be involved in Stampede School where they will learn, among other things, about the extensive recycling operations that take place at the Stampede every year.  Regular contact with the natural world is an important part of Grade 2 teacher, Bev Barnes’ program.  Bev tries to get kids into the natural environment regularly, hoping that the personal connections that students make with the natural world will help them to find purpose and meaning in the learning they undertake regarding reducing their impact on the planet.

Mount View School also participates in Destination Conservation, a program that encourages the organization of projects that help to reduce the amount of energy and water consumed, and also reduce the amount of waste created.  Mount View has for many years participated in the Outdoor School program where students are actively engaged in environmental learning.

Bravo to the staff and students of Mount View School – a school making a positive difference to the natural environment.
