Web 2.0 Guidelines
What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is a term that refers to online applications that focus on:
- supporting social networking
- online collaboration
- and learning
- examples include: educational games, media, news, wikis, blogs, etc.
Why do we need Web 2.0?
There is tremendous value in using Web 2.0 tools and applications where appropriate, including the:
- increase in student engagement
- personalization of learning
- making real world connections
What are the Web 2.0 Guidelines?
The Web 2.0 Guidelines have been developed to:
- provide a structure for schools and departments to make safe and informed decisions around use of Web 2.0 Tools
- ensure that schools or departments act with due diligence when making educational choices that will impact student learning
When should the Guidelines be used?
The Guidelines must be followed if:
- student data is required to set up and use an application, tool, or website (for example, their names, emails, gender or other personal information is being provided)
- student work is being shared online through the use of a Web 2.0 Tool
There is a list of Accepted Web 2.0 Tools that have already undergone a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA's) and are available for you to use. You will easily be able to review the tool of interest, and if it meets your needs and you can adhere to the conditions set out, you are free the adopt the PIA and use the tool in your class by simply filling out the remaining information fields and submit. If the tool you wish to use does not appear on the list of Accepted Web 2.0 Tools, you will need to follow the Web 2.0 Guidelines and make a new submission.
To support educational technology decision making when using Web 2.0 Tools and using the Guidelines, the CBE is offering the following:
