pilot program launches in calgary schools
CALGARY - On Tuesday, August 30, 2011, teachers, principals and parents will gather to kick off the launch of Start Smart Stay Safe.
More than 4,000 of Calgary’s Kindergarten to Grade 6 students will take part in this new pilot program beginning September in 15 Calgary schools.
The intention is to support schools in a meaningful way and to move the focus of community policing toward education, early intervention and prevention.
This collaborative initiative brings together the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School District and the Mount Royal University Centre for Child Well-Being.

Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Ungar will close the launch with a presentation on “Why Kids go to School and Why They Don’t.” He will also provide a free presentation to the public of “Too Safe for Their Own Good,” at Mount Royal University Centre for Child Well-Being on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2011 at 7 p.m. Caregivers, service providers and community members are encouraged to attend. Media are invited to attend the launch event at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 at the Glenmore Inn. The Calgary Police Service Honour Guard will march and a youth choir will perform a song written and composed for the Start Smart Stay Safe program at 9 a.m. followed by the speakers.
