Public school enrolment surpasses projections

Calgary—The Calgary Board of Education’s enrolment for 2011-12 is up by 1,295 students. With more people moving to Calgary than expected, the increase in students exceeds that of the projection of 415.

“Net migration impacts enrolment,” says Ingrid Schmidt, CBE senior planner.

Net migration is the difference between the number of persons moving into Calgary and the number moving away. Between April 2010 and April 2011, the population increased by 9,563 due to net migration. This is a significant increase over 2010 when Calgary experienced a negative net migration.

Other factors that contributed to the increase in enrolment include: 2005 and 2006 birth rates, returning grade 12 students and the opening of the new Ernest Manning High School.
