Ken Weipert to guide student-athletes as principal at National Sport School

CALGARY—Ken Weipert will lead the National Sport School into a new era at Canada Olympic Park. Weipert was welcomed as principal of the Calgary Board of Education school by WinSport Canada.

Weipert brings a wealth of experience to his new role having worked in a variety of positions within the CBE including: assistant principal, teacher, technology learning and staffing consultant.

“I have always believed a personalized approach to learning is ideal for all students, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to do exactly that at the National Sport School,” said Weipert, who started in his new position on Oct. 3. “I am excited to work with our talented group of teachers to help these young student-athletes achieve their goals by providing them with meaningful, relevant learning opportunities.”

Sydney Smith, CBE area director, said, “We are delighted to appoint Mr. Ken Weipert to the principalship of the National Sport School.  His strong focus on the personalization of learning for each student-athlete at NSS will certainly contribute positively to their continued success.”

The National Sport School was formed in 1994 after studies indicated that close to 50 per cent of youth demonstrating exceptional skills in athletics were forced to choose either school or sport due to conflicting schedules. It is for that reason that WinSport Canada and the CBE partnered to create this innovative educational program that balances a student-athlete’s academic and athletic life. Since its inception, the school has consistently graduated student-athletes from across the country that rank amongst the top academic performers in Alberta.
