Celebrating the Year of the Dragon with the CBE

CALGARYHighwood School’s Mandarin bilingual program welcomes the Year of the Dragon with special Chinese New Year assemblies at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 20.

Media are invited to the celebration, which will include Chinese artwork created by students, cultural songs, traditional dance, a dramatic play and a martial arts demonstration. The afternoon performance will also feature a traditional lion dance. Students will be available for interviews and photos.

Highwood School is one of two CBE elementary schools that offer a Mandarin bilingual program. This program, which includes over 300 students, is one of the many bilingual and alternative programs offered by the CBE to help achieve its goal of providing learning as unique as every student.

Bilingual programming provides a rich environment for the learning of languages, cultures and subject area content. Bilingual education strives to provide intensive language learning environments, with the potential for high academic achievement and enriched cultural experiences that maximize student opportunities for learning.
