CBE Board of Trustees approves names of four new schools
CALGARY – The Board of Trustees of the Calgary Board of Education has approved the names of four CBE schools that are expected to open in September 2012.
The approved names are: Nose Creek School, Captain Nichola Goddard School, Twelve Mile Coulee School and Ted Harrison School.
Nose Creek School will accommodate students in Grades 4-9 and will serve the residents of Coventry Hills and Country Hills Village. Nose Creek runs on the east side of and borders the community of Coventry Hills. Captain Nichola Goddard School will accommodate students in Grades 4-9 in the community of Panorama Hills. Captain Nichola Goddard was the first female Canadian soldier killed in combat in Canadian operations in Afghanistan, and believed that her service would prepare the way for others to build a better life, specifically through education.
Twelve Mile Coulee School will accommodate students in Grades 4-9 and will serve residents in the community of Tuscany. This school is named after the natural environmental park and historical hunting rail located one block from where the school is being built. Ted Harrison School will accommodate students in Grades 5-9 in the community of Taradale. Ted Harrison is one of Canada’s most popular artists, who has written and illustrated sever children’s books. All four schools will have an opening day capacity of 900 students.
These four school names were selected based on the recommendations made by four school naming committees that gathered and evaluated stakeholder input on possible names. School naming committees are comprised of CBE Trustees, parent and/or community representatives and members of CBE administration.
- According to the CBE’s policy on school naming, schools should be named:
- for the districts in which they are located;
- or for locations or events that show great Canadian historical significance;
- or after a Canadian person of recognized stature, whose life work aligns with achievement of the organizational Ends, or who has demonstrated exemplary achievement of the organizational Ends;
- or by any other name which may be deemed appropriate by the Board of Trustees.
