SUNALTA PARENTS INITIATE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

On Monday, October 22, staff and students of Sunalta Elementary School, joined their aldermen, parents, community members, and city officials on a walk through the community of Sunalta and Scarboro to Show their support for the “Safe Routes to School” program.

The walk, organized by Sunalta parent Tanya McFerrin, began at the school and continued through to Royal Sunalta Park.

Along the walk, McFerrin pointed out the potential hazards for children walking or biking to and from school.

“Our goal was to raise awareness that will lead to action,” explains McFerrin.

Pam Gillett, mother of two and resident of Sunalta for eight years, expressed concern about Superior Ave. where there is a constant and steady flow of traffic though the neighbourhood.

Another issue the community believes needs to be addressed is a lack of crosswalks and stop signs. Some parents also think speed bumps could support the safety of their children.

Sunalta is a strong community with an immense sense of togetherness. Laura Longmire has lived in Sunalta for seven years, and feels hopeful.

“It’s reassuring to know they’re doing something,” said Longmire.
