EARTHWORMS, ROBOTS AND COLLISION SCENE INVESTIGATIONS:
MUST BE THE POTENTIALS IN MOTION CONFERENCE

Hundreds of Calgary Board of Education middle school students mix theory and practice in the Potentials In Motion 2010 conference.

Potentials In Motion is a conference designed to stimulate and challenge the creativity of participants through the provision of integrated workshops related to drama, script writing, language, math and science. The workshops include Lego Mindstorms-Robotics which encourages students to use Lego blocks to build robots and program them to perform different tasks; Gyataku – Fishing Printing will explore the ancient art of Japanese fish printing in which students create art using real fish, inks and paper; Earthworms: Cut me up will give students a venue to learn more about earthworms from the outside in.

By far, the most popular workshop is CSI (Collision Scene Reconstruction) in which use the techniques involved in collecting and evaluating evidence left at the scene of a collision. Through seven hands-on inquiries, students assume the role of a collision reconstructionist, employing the scientific principles and mathematical practices used at present-day collision scenes. Potentials In Motion is rounded out by drama sessions, focusing on radio plays as well as theatrical activism (looking at agit-prop theatre, invisible theatre, and culture jamming).
