UNIVERSITY SCHOOL HOSTS COLLABORATIVE MATH FAIR
University School is hosting a Math Fair on March 22 that will showcase the great collaboration that has taken place between its Grade 1/2 students and Grade 10 Students from Sir Winston Churchill High School.
A Math Fair is a public display of mathematical investigations, in which students present math problems to visitors. It’s similar to a "Science Fair" but with active audience participation in mathematical problem solving.
To prepare for the Math Fair, the Grade 1/2 students have been working alongside Grade 10 Pure Math students from Sir Winston Churchill and Dr. Eva Nosal from the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences has become a regular classroom participant. They have also had support from Galileo Educational Network at the University of Calgary.
The mathematical investigations have provided challenge to both the Grade 1/2s and the Grade 10s. In working together, they have found that mathematical thinking is more than a memorization of formulas or number facts and have been involved in the rigorous work of real Mathematicians.
This work also highlights the kind of changes in the new Alberta Mathematics Program of Studies. The particular math investigations address both the Grade 1/2 and Grade 10 Alberta Mathematics Program of Studies.
