Metis Calgary Family Services Society receives Lighthouse award
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) supports exceptional learning opportunities by focusing on the needs of all students. It recognizes that the need to belong is something that is felt by all human beings and when we belong, we have an enhanced ability to achieve. Connecting with the community enhances the sense of belonging and collaboration.
At the June 28 Board meeting, the CBE was pleased to recognize the Metis Calgary Family Services Society, a valued friend and partner, with this month’s Lighthouse Award. Metis Calgary Family Services Society has partnered with the CBE since 1994, serving students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Its relationship began with a stay-in-school program and over the years, it has shifted to focus on preschool and kindergarten.
The Lighthouse Award program was created to honour and recognize organizations that make significant and meaningful contributions to CBE students and schools. The Metis Calgary Family Services Society is a valuable resource, particularly for students as they begin their learning in school during very formative years and as they continue their journey through school.
The first Medicine Wheel program began at Sir James Lougheed School with the support of the CBE and the Government of Alberta. This early child development initiative allows traditional and cultural elements to be woven into the daily lives of these children. The Medicine Wheel Early Learning Center is a school-readiness program that reflects a culturally enriched curriculum delivered in the context of public education. The program supports and encourages child and family development in a balanced manner. It covers the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life and development. Everyone who has exposure to Medicine Wheel benefits; from the teachers, who learn the philosophy, to the Elders, who share their stories with all of the children who participate.
The legacy of Medicine Wheel for Kindergarten students follows them on their learning path, but more importantly, the model involves all elements of each child’s community to play an active role along that path. Parents and caregivers help to bridge culture and schooling with daily experiences that are rooted in the strength and pride in one’s identity. This learning environment allows culture and education to come together in order to strengthen understandings. The program is currently located at West Dover School.
The blending of cultural perspectives and learning through Alberta Education curriculum provides students with a strong foundation toward achieving the Mega-End. The Mega-End states, “Each student, in keeping with his or her individual abilities and gifts, will complete high school with a foundation of learning to function effectively in life, work and continued learning.” Citizenship and personal development are also focus areas for the program.
The Lighthouse Award was presented to Mark Laycock, CEO of Programs and Lori-Anne Houle, CEO Operations on June 28. Both Mark and Lori-Anne spoke passionately about the benefits of this strong partnership and how it benefits students and the community. The CBE looks forward to continuing our collaboration with Metis Calgary Family Services Society.
