October's Lighthouse award winner

Moving is never an easy thing. Imagine moving across the world, far away from your friends, family and country. Not knowing the language or having anyone to relate to are only part of the difficulties faced by new families. The transition to school is also difficult for the families and the school staff who may not have any specific knowledge about the family’s culture, background or level of schooling. Every year hundreds, if not thousands, of CBE students and their families are faced with these challenges and more.

The Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association is a tremendous partner that has a variety of programs and services that help ease the transition for young immigrant women and their families into Canada. These programs foster a welcoming, understanding and friendly environment inside the CBE for young women who may even feel isolated in their own communities.

“Culture Clubs” program is exclusively for young immigrant women at the junior and senior high levels. Immigrant girls from diverse background are brought together to discuss a wide range of issues that pertain to their age groups. By providing life skills support group activities and individual support through counseling, the program fosters self worth and belonging.

The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters program also known as “HIPPY” provides support to low-income, low-literacy parents of 3- and 4-year-old children. Through weekly in-home support, parents receive materials and activities to do with their children. Activities support the literacy development of both parent and child and set children up for success in the Canadian school system.

The CIWA also provides women with skills and opportunities to gain employment in Canada. “Choosing the Right Path: Career Choices for Immigrant Women” is a CIWA program that provides support to individuals looking for employment and to start a career in Canada. In the spring they hold workshops for high school students focused on work experience opportunities and an introduction to post-secondary possibilities.

The services and programs offered by the CIWA are instrumental for many new families in Canada. Their programs support Ends One Statement Academic Success – Gain knowledge, skills and attitudes for academic success and life as well as Ends Four Personal Development – Each student will achieve their highest potential.

The Calgary Board of Education would like to sincerely thank Executive Director of Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, Beba Svigir for her work and the work of her organization in extending these services to our schools, students and their families.

Congratulations Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, Lighthouse Award winner for October.
