Outstanding CBE construction projects honoured

Two Calgary Board of Education projects have been recognized as outstanding Alberta construction projects at a “Top Projects” awards ceremony in December 2011.

CBE Education Centre

The CBE Education Centre received an honourable mention and the Western Canada High School’s restoration and modernization project was honoured as a finalist at the awards ceremony for Alberta’s outstanding construction projects for 2011. The awards program is conducted by the Alberta Construction Magazine.

EllisDon Corporation was recognized for the Education Centre, at 1221 - 8 Street S.W., and Clark Builders was recognized for Western Canada High School, at 641 - 17 Avenue S.W.

The CBE moved into the new Education Centre last year. It accommodates about 550 employees who had previously been working at six different locations across the city. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the CBE and is the Board of Trustees meetings’ centre. The Education Centre also provides learning opportunities for students, through Campus Calgary, and outreach programs, such as Encore CBE which works to re-engage youth in learning. The Education Centre is comprised of a ten-storey tower and the adjacent historic sandstone Dr. Carl Safran Centre.

Western Canada High School

The $35-million Western Canada High School project focused on the rehabilitation and modernization design of essential building elements.  These included the building envelope, barrier free accessibility, site development, technology infrastructure, hazardous materials removal, mechanical renovations and electrical improvements.  A number of architectural and structural changes were made the to improve building functionality and the deferred major maintenance backlog was cleared. Besides the safety improvements and the enhanced quality of the indoor environment, the following key historic elements of Western Canada High School, which opened in 1903 and was developed in several stages up to 1967, were retained in the modernization of the site: Cenotaph, East and West Wings, Technical Shop Wing, Gymnasium, Centre Block and Courtyard.

Frank Coppinger, Superintendent, Facilities and Environmental Services, indicated that it was an extraordinary achievement to successfully complete this difficult construction project on an historic facility, while the school remained open during the renovation. This was possible only because of the keen interest of all stakeholders (students, school staff, construction workers, project managers and CBE’s capital planning and development staff), in working together to ensure that the result would be a fully restored and modernized Western Canada High School.
