CBE graduate makes shortlist for 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction

Esi Edugyan made the shortlist for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction. She is one of six nominees, earning the nomination for her second novel entitled Half Blood Blues. Edugyan grew up in Calgary and attended Westgate School, Bishop Pinkham School and Central Memorial High School.

Edugyan credits two CBE teachers with inspiring her to pursue writing as a career. Edugyan says, in an interview on CBC Calgary’s Eyeopener radio program, “It’s because I had such strong role models and such wonderful teachers who maybe saw something there and wanted to coax it out, and took the time to coax it out.”

She names two teachers specifically who helped her to develop her writing talent: Ms. Robertson, who taught her at Bishop Pinkham School and Carol Windlinger, who taught her at Central Memorial High School. “I was a very shy child, so I really, really appreciate and do credit these teachers for taking the time and being so, just so wonderful.”

First awarded in 1969, the Man Booker Prize for Fiction rewards the best book of the year. The 2011 winner will be announced on Oct. 18.
