CBE junk-food-free for January 2012
At the same time many people are making New Year’s resolutions to eat better, the Calgary Board of Education will have removed all “junk food” for sale in schools.
The CBE has been steadily improving the nutritional value of products available for students to buy since 2007. Since Jan. 1, 2011, the rule has been 80-20. At least 80 per cent of food available in schools must come from the top two categories defined by Alberta Health: “choose most often” and “choose sometimes.” No more than 20 per cent of food can come from the “choose least often” category, so-called “junk food.”
By Jan. 1, 2012, 100 per cent of food available for students to buy in CBE schools must come from the preferred nutritional categories. This standard will equal the highest standards for students in Alberta.
“We are excited about that,” said Naomi Johnson, Chief Superintendent of Schools. “We are even more excited because our strategy has always been to complement menus with education.”
Addressing a public meeting of the Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Johnson added, “Calgary Board of Education students are learning how to make healthier choices for themselves everywhere and all of the time. We believe this is the greatest investment in the lifelong health of our students.”
