Connaught School celebrates its centennial
The city’s oldest school was filled with song, laughter and tears as Connaught School celebrated its 100th anniversary Thursday, Oct. 20.
Kindergarten to Grade 6 students performed a selection of specially-written songs for the event, including one with the chorus, “anyone can grow up to be Calgary’s mayor,” which was used to introduce Mayor Naheed Nenshi. The mayor told students that was indeed true, since he was a first-generation Canadian and graduate of a CBE school that was very much like their diverse school.
Student masters of ceremonies Elena, Mustafa and Letizia welcomed the mayor, CBE Board of Trustees Chair Pat Cochrane, Chief Superintendent Naomi Johnson, area MLA Kent Hehr and other dignitaries, former principals, staff and students to the event. Principal Fran McGilvray Cooke wrapped up the ceremony with thanks to the many partners in the community who help make Connaught such a vibrant place for learning. The music created for the event was led by Paul Finkleman, known in the music world as Paulo, a popular Calgary songwriter and entertainer.
