CBE welcomes feedback on wind turbine proposal

The Calgary Board of Education is welcoming public feedback on a proposal to build a wind turbine at Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School in Canyon Meadows.

The CBE is proposing to build the 42.7- metre wind turbine on the playing fields on the north field of the school, adjacent to Anderson Road S.W. It would be a single-pole tower, with a 9.6 metre radius rotor. That is about one-third of the size of wind turbines that are seen in such wind farms as those near Pincher Creek.

The wind turbine is being proposed for three reasons:

  • It would create an educational opportunity for students to learn about energy production options, costs and benefits.
  • It will generate clean power and contribute to the greening of Alberta’s electrical grid
  • It will reduce the CBE’s carbon footprint as it is projected to save approximately 10 per of the school’s electrical cost. Reducing the CBE’s carbon footprint contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the community and the city as a whole.

The proposed project is part of a larger energy project that comes with a guarantee that it will pay for itself in 20 years.

About 55 area residents attended an information session on the project at the school Wednesday. Frank Coppinger, superintendent of facilities and environmental services, says this was the first step in the process of gathering public input. The CBE will be consulting further with residents and groups as the process proceeds. The public is also welcome to provide its input online. Public input is greatly appreciated.
