CBE graduate wins $50,000 Giller Prize

Esi Edugyan won the Giller Prize this year for her book, Half Blood Blues. Edugyan grew up in Calgary and attended Westgate School, Bishop Pinkham School and Central Memorial High School.

She credited two CBE teachers with inspiring her to pursue writing as a career. Edugyan says, in an interview on CBC Calgary’s Eyeopener radio program, “It’s because I had such strong role models and such wonderful teachers who maybe saw something there and wanted to coax it out, and took the time to coax it out.”

She names two teachers specifically who helped her to develop her writing talent: Ms. Robertson, who taught her at Bishop Pinkham School and Carol Windlinger, who taught her at Central Memorial High School. “I was a very shy child, so I really, really appreciate and do credit these teachers for taking the time and being so, just so wonderful.”
