Canned food creativity drives success of Mayor's annual food drive
Calgary Board of Education students and employees raised a whopping $152,158.97 in food and funds for the Mayor’s Food Drive this year, surpassing last year’s donation of $146,881.78.
The CBE is the largest donor to the Mayor’s food drive, and this year over 130 schools and departments helped to gather the 140,687 pounds of food and $11,471.97 in cash to support the Calgary Food Bank in its goal to feed hungry Calgarians.
This year’s campaign introduced Can Creation as a new way for students and employees to get excited about the program. Classes worked together to create designs and structures made of canned food and other non-perishable items, and they competed against other classes and schools to see who could bring in the most food.
At the top was Centennial High School with 3030 pounds of food and $142.00 in donations. The 200 students at The Hamptons School also made a great contribution with an average of 10 items each for a total donation of over 2000 items.
