CBE French immersion students receive internationally recognized diploma

Learning a new language has the power to open a world of possibilities, and for a number of Calgary Board of Education French immersion students, the possibilities are expanding exponentially.

In the fall, 62 CBE students from four high schools with French Immersion programs participated in a Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) session with a 100-percent success rate.

The DELF is an internationally recognized language credentialing diploma that allows for post-secondary, work, travel, exchange and volunteer opportunities in France and abroad. The diploma is based on the four language competencies of speaking, reading, writing and listening.

Language credentialing gained popularity in 2001 when a European Union council resolution recommended using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) to set up common systems of validation of language ability. As a standardized language proficiency assessment that is recognized internationally, the DELF provides a lifelong diploma upon successful completion.

The CBE is an accredited DELF center. It will be co-hosting along with the Canadian Association of French Immersion Teachers a DELF Symposium Jan. 19. The goal of the symposium is to inform interested teachers, administrators, school boards, parents and the private sector of the benefits of the DELF. Dominique Suquet from the Embassy of France in Canada will be presenting the DELF to symposium participants in a global context.

The next DELF session for students will be held the week of April 16, 2012.For more information, please e-mail delf@cbe.ab.ca
