Campus Calgary opens at CBE Education Centre
Campus Calgary/Open Minds opened its 13th location in Calgary at the CBE’s Education Centre on Dec. 5. The site’s first official group of students was made up of Grade 3-4 students from Cranston School. Students who participate in this unique location have the opportunity to learn in the Education Centre’s historical classroom, the future of learning lab and other areas around the building and in the community.
Campus Calgary/Open Minds is an innovative and award-winning program developed by the Calgary Board of Education in collaboration with corporate partners to bring students into the community for a full week of learning. Other sites in Calgary include the Calgary Zoo, City Hall and Ralph Klein Park.
During their week at the Education Centre, students from across Calgary will speak with the Chief Superintendent, meet the Trustees, take historical walks in the community, work with experts from a variety of CBE departments, examine historical artifacts and explore how the inner-city community of Connaught is the same as or different from their communities.
Each year, approximately 200 teachers and 6,000 students participate in one of the Campus Calgary/Open Minds schools. Unlike regular field trips, this program puts the teacher “in the driver’s seat” and each week is tailor-made to the needs of the students and the curriculum they are learning in their classroom. It provides authentic learning experiences, so students can relate material they’ve learned in the classroom to the world around them.
Campus Calgary is another exciting way the CBE provides learning as unique as every student.
