Budget 2016 and our Three-Year School Capital plan 2017-2020

Apr. 15, 2016

On March 9, 2016 the Calgary Board of Education Board of Trustees approved the Three-Year School Capital Plan 2017-2020 requesting 19 new schools and 10 major modernizations from the Provincial Government. This newest plan identifies a single prioritized capital list consisting of both new school construction and major modernization requests, as required by Alberta Education. The plan identifies priorities for new school construction and major modernizations based on criteria approved by the Board of Trustees.

Each year, school boards submit a Three-Year School Capital Plan to Alberta Education by April 1. The Calgary Board of Education doesn’t decide when new schools are built. The Provincial Government determines where, when and how new schools are built.

In Budget 2016, the Alberta government presented a list of unfunded capital projects within the government’s capital plan. Out of the 50 projects listed for Education, four new schools and two major modernizations were identified for the CBE. These priorities were based on the Three-Year School Capital Plan 2016-2019 not our most recent list of capital projects submitted.

We will need to work with the government to finalize the list to ensure schools are built where they best serve the needs of our students. We will look forward to funding announcements to come.

The CBE currently has 28 capital projects underway, including new school and replacement school construction, as well as major modernizations. The target date for completion of these projects is between September 2016 and September 2018.
