Misuse of Internet
Recently, there has been some misuse of the Internet on home computers.
Some students have created websites about themselves and have including
hurtful remarks about others. Such websites cannot not be duplicated or
used at school due to the Calgary Board of Education Internet safety filters.
However, in this age of technology, it is imperative that as families
and schools we teach children to be "cyber safe" at home and
at school. Posting photos and personal information on the Internet has
the potential to be extremely dangerous. Adding hurtful remarks about
others can be personally damaging or verge into illegal actions such as
harassment or privacy issues.
Teaching safety and ethics both in the school and on the Internet is
ongoing work as part of our focus on citizenship and the technology curriculum
mandated by Alberta Education. In addition to regular practices listed
below, students may receive a presentation on Cyber Safety by the Calgary
Police Department.
What can you as parents do about school
safety and cyber safety?
