For The Love of Reading: Book Bags for Kids 2009
It takes a village to raise a reader, and on Thursday, November 12th CBE representatives, corporate partners, and leadership students from John G. Diefenbaker School rolled up their sleeves to stuff over 1,000 book bags at the Grand & Toy branch offices. The day’s efforts were done in support of the 2009 Book Bags for Kids program, which provides over 1,000 CBE students with the gift of books prior to the holiday season.
Trustees Pamela King and Lynn Ferguson helped kick off the day by highlighting the importance of youth literacy within our greater Calgary learning community. Special guests Ronald McDonald and several Calgary Hitmen hockey players also pitched in to lend a hand on the ‘assembly line’ where volunteers put together the book bags. The final product delivered to students will contain two fiction and two non-fiction books, a teddy bear, mittens, socks, and other special items.
Giving this gift of books inspires children to read, engages their families in youth literacy activities, and directly supports in the achievement of the Educational Ends Statements. The knowledge and skills children acquire through home reading supports their learning and success in school. Unfortunately, not all children have access to books at home. Book Bags for Kids, was developed with the goal that many children could receive their own first set of quality books this holiday season.
The CBE is proud to work with all Book Bag for Kids partners which include:
