CBE student's talent pays off
Each year, Calgary Stampede committee members, exhibitors and sponsors bring their passion for agriculture to Aggie Days to celebrate the importance of agriculture in everyday life from food products to clothing. Back in 1986, Aggie Days toured 150 students in a small area of the barn in Stampede Park. This year, celebrating its 25th year, Aggie Days hosted over 9,000 students and teachers in two complete halls in the BMO Centre at Stampede Park. Students had the opportunity to experience hands-on exhibits, interactive displays and demonstrations in the BMO Centre.
This year, the Agriculture Education Committee of the Calgary Stampede together with the Calgary Herald and sponsor Bayer CropScience Inc. offered elementary students the added opportunity to participate in the ‘Aggie Days: Front Cover Art Contest’. It was a great opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and knowledge around the importance of agriculture in their daily lives.
The winning design featured on the front cover of this year’s Aggie Days insert was created by Songeun Y., a Grade 5 student from Chinook Park School. A cheque for $200 was presented to Songeun at a special Aggie Days Reception. In addition to her prize, Chinook Park School receives a SMART Board System valued at approximately $5,000 sponsored by Bayer CropScience Inc.
Other CBE Honourable Mentions included Alex B., Grade 5 from Simons Valley School, Leslie G., Grade 4 from Edgemont School, and Jake G., Grade 5 from Midnapore School. We acknowledge the many wonderful entries created by CBE students and the great encouragement and support from their teachers.
The Aggie Days supplement is an informative resource that enhances student awareness and understanding of the agriculture industry. This insert was published by the Calgary Herald in partnership with the Calgary Stampede Agriculture Education committee. Copies were distributed to all Grade 4 classes in the Calgary Board of Education.
Aggie Days along with other programs and scholarships demonstrates the Calgary Stampede’s commitment to education.
